What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure to increase breast size and improve breast shape. Although different methods (fat injection or filling materials) have been identified for breast augmentation, the placement of new generation breast implants is the most common only used and most reliable method for breast augmentation.

Why have a Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation is applied for breasts, which are smaller due to genetic factors, out of proportion to the body size, or restore breast volume if they have lost their fullness due to excessive and sudden weight loss or pregnancy.

Breast augmentation performed by Dr. Serbülent Güzey is a safe surgery with long-lasting results and an overwhelming number of patients who are happier and more confident with their new appearance.

With a breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Serbülent Güzey can correct noticeable breast asymmetry as its one of the most effective procedures to do so. Breast implants can also be used to help correct tuberous breast deformities.

  • You might consider a Breast augmentation to:
  • Restore breast fullness after pregnancy & breastfeeding
  • Feeling more confident in a swimsuit
  • Adding balance to better complement curvy hips
  • Enhance self-image

“Women choose to have the procedure for many different reasons – having larger breasts is just one of them.” – Serbülent Güzey

Who is a good candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation can be a great option to improve the shape and size of the breasts; however, certain patients are better suited to the procedure, and it is important to have realistic expectations about the surgery, recovery, and results. In general, you are likely a good candidate for a Breast augmentation if you agree with the following:

  • You are in good overall physical and mental health
  • You have realistic expectations of the outcome
  • Your breasts are small, lack adequate cleavage or volume or are out of proportion to your body size
  • You have the ability to properly rest and recover post-surgery as you won’t be able to perform certain tasks or do any heavy lifting
  • You are at least 18 years old

A lot of women think that they shouldn’t get breast surgeries before having a baby as they think they won’t be able to breastfeed following a Breast Augmentation. That’s wrong, there is no evidence that breast augmentation interferes with breastfeeding.

To undergo a Breast Augmentation, you’d have to be able to plan a stay of 5 days in Istanbul.

Breast Implant Choices

Today you have more choices than ever to help you customize your new look.

“The biggest mistake is that patients often focus on certain points, which is often the shape of the prosthesis and the plan to be placed. It must not be forgotten that the breast structure, skin elasticity, breast measurements are different for everyone. For this reason, to provide the desired image patients can tell expectations about the size and shape but the planning of the technical part must be left to the surgeon.” – Serbülent Güzey

Size:

Breast implants range in size from about 150cc to 1050cc. Many patients require a different sized breast implant for each breast; this helps to achieve the best possible symmetry. The size you choose depends on your existing breast size, your personal goals, and Dr. Serbülent Güzey recommendations.

Filling type:

Saline, Silicone Gel, or Highly Cohesive Silicone “Gummy Bear” Implants. Neither is “best,” but there are some differences in cost, feel, and incision requirements that you need to consider. Dr. Serbülent Güzey will help you to find the right implant type for you.

Plane:

One of the most important factors in a successful breast augmentation is the proper placement of the implant. There are three plans where the implants can be put:

  • Under the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement)
  • Directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (submammary/ subglandular placement)
  • Dual plane (upper portion of the implant under the pectoral muscle, the lower portion of the implant over the pectoral muscle)

All of these locations have various advantages compared to each other.

The selection of the plane is related to the type of implant, degree of enlargement desired your body type and the physical examination of the breast during the consultation with Dr. Serbülent Güzey. There is not a standard surgery method, it must be carefully customized for all of the patients.

Shape:

Saline and Silicone Gel implants are typically round, while gummy bear implants come in shaped and round options. Round implants will typically achieve a fuller upper pole (the top portion of your breast), while shaped implants lend a gently sloping look to your breast profile. Both can look very natural with the skilled help of Dr. Serbülent Güzey.

Profile:

Dr. Serbülent Güzey will help you choose the profile of your breast implants based on your existing proportions and your goals. Generally, patients with a more petite frame will require a higher profile implant to achieve the desired size increase while ensuring the implants are not too wide at the base.

Incision Options for Breast Augmentation

The advanced surgical techniques applied by Dr. Serbülent Güzey are designed to minimize all visible scarring. While some scarring is involved with breast augmentation, the scars are usually just a few centimeters long and are located in such a way as to become barely noticeable as they fade with time. The quality of scar also depends on other factors, including genetics, exposure from the body to nicotine, and infection.

Depending on your anatomy and your desired outcome, Dr. Serbülent Güzey will use one of the following incision techniques to place your breast implants:

  • Inframammary involves a short incision made in the crease underneath the breast, called the inframammary fold. This leaves a thin, 3-4 cm scar that is easily concealed within the crease. The advantages of this incision type include a wider access point, allowing Dr. Serbülent Güzey to place larger silicone implants with precision.
  • Peri-areolar: the incision is made around the outer edge of the areola, so the resulting scar is located within this natural transition in pigmentation. Dr. Serbülent Güzey often uses this incision type if he is also performing a mild to moderate breast lift at the same time (areola lift).
  • Trans-axillary involves a small incision made within the armpit, through which Dr. Serbülent Güzey will place the breast implant. This leaves a small scar within the armpit but achieves a breast augmentation with no scar on the breast itself.

Breast Augmentation Consultation

The consultation begins with taking your photographs for our medical archive.  Then Dr. Serbülent Güzey will examine the breasts and nipples and plans the method and the incision area. Dr. Serbülent Güzey will use a surgical marker to do markings which will assist him during the surgery.

During your consultation, he answers all your questions, listens, and understands your expectations and makes the planning based on your desires regarding the size and shape.

What is involved in Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia and begins with the incision.

Once the incision is made, Dr. Serbülent Güzey prepares the pocket, inserts, and places the breast implant.

After that, the incisions are closed with layered sutures. Rarely drains are placed to drain the fluid from the surgery. The area gets covered by dressing and bandages and a special bra is put on.

The duration of the surgery is between 45 minutes and 2 hours.

After Breast Augmentation

After the surgery, a special bra is used to prevent swelling and support the breasts.

Eventually placed drains will drain the fluid from the surgery and will get removed some days after the surgery (depending on the amount of fluid).

Patients should start light walking shortly after surgery – nothing strenuous, just short walks around the room every other hour. It is good for the circulation and helps prevent blood clots.

Our patients will stay in the hospital for one night after the surgery and get discharged on the following day.

While pain is typically minimal and easily controlled through pain medication, you may feel sore the first week.

The first shower can normally be taken on the 3rd day after surgery and you should be able to resume light daily activities within 1 week and return to work within 7 to 14 days.

Aftercare of Breast Augmentation

For the fastest recovery and best results, it’s essential for you to take special care of your breasts and body in the first days and weeks after your breast augmentation.

Bra

You will have to wear a supportive surgical bra for 6 weeks after your breast augmentation to ensure you heal optimally.

Wound care

You will be supplied with a comprehensive packet of post-operative wound care utils as well as the instructions, explaining how to take care of the wounds and how to disinfect the small incisions.

Be sure to follow these instructions to ensure a healthy wound recovery and eliminate potential risks.

Nutrition

Adequate hydration (drinking plenty of water) and a healthy diet (vegetables, fruits, lean protein, and whole grains) are essential for the aftercare of your breast augmentation.

Exercise After Breast Augmentation

After your breast augmentation, you should take light walks as soon as possible after surgery as a light cardiovascular activity to help your lymphatic system work properly and better.

After two weeks, patients can start more intense cardio such as walking on a treadmill or walking uphill. At a month most patients can resume most exercise except heavy lifting. At six weeks, patients are generally completely healed and can resume all exercises.

After breast augmentation, especially with implants under the muscle, we recommend patients try to avoid strenuous chest exercises such as push-ups. Since the implants sit under the muscle, contraction places downward and outward pressure on them which, over time can result in the implants dropping or becoming displaced over time. As a general rule, we also tell patients to listen to their bodies – if they do something that causes swelling or discomfort, stop doing it, and give it a little more time.

Life After Breast Augmentation

Your breasts may seem to sit high on the chest at first. This is normal, and your implants will settle into their optimal position over the next several weeks, with final results after a couple of months. However, nothing can stop the normal aging process; over time, breast tissue will change. You can help prevent unnecessary sagging by wearing a bra with adequate support for your activity level. Also, future pregnancies, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process may affect your results, and a second surgery may be needed to correct any changes you are unhappy with over time.

For women who have undergone breast enlargement surgery, it is recommended to seek an MRI scan three years after surgery, and every two years following that, as a precaution.
