Extremity reconstruction is using for the repair of deformities in the lower and upper extremities. It brings serious functional benefits for patients. Although the surgery for the reconstruction of extremities (limbs) is difficult, the results of such surgeries are very satisfactory.
The “extremity reconstruction” concept describes a wide spectrum. In this concept, there may be problems. Such as the congenital hand, arm, and leg anomalies and extremity damages that occur because of injuries caused by different reasons. The main target is common in both disease groups; reaching the most functional result in the most accurate way. Because of such a wide range of diseases, the desired outcomes may be achieved with a simple skin excision process in such patient groups. Also, sometimes there is a need for repair with the help of microsurgical techniques.
Many different surgical techniques were identified for the repair of each deformity in extremity reconstruction. For this reason, it is important to make individual planning for operations. If the patients who are candidates for such surgery have previous medical files. This will be guided in deciding what to do. After a detailed examination of a patient who presents with these data, possible treatment options are explained to the patient, and the appropriate technique is planned for repair. Especially in children who have congenital deformities, it is important to follow up on the patient in a close manner by an experienced surgeon after birth and to perform the surgery as soon as possible.
